My Visit To A Chess Maker
By Conus on Oct 13, 2008 in Technology
I have always been a chess enthusiast. In fact I have won many chess tournaments already both in my area and in the national level.
Last month, I visited a chess maker in our town accompanied by my brother who is also into chess.
Chess pieces could be similar to an actual game of chess except that in making the chess pieces, the maker should not only be mentally sharp but physically alert as well.
Although chess makers use automatic lathes to make each piece, the one manning the machine still needs to watch the process for precision. A single machine can be complicated to operate. With all those lathe machine attachments suited for different chess forms, one has to be sharp enough to get the correct attachment and scraping of the metal, wood or any special material the chess piece may be made of.
I imagine in the olden times when each piece was hand crafted. The chess maker had to have extreme skills in arts and crafts. Nowadays, thanks to technology, we now have automatic lathe machines to save time and money for mass production.
I think that a chess enthusiast’s life is never complete without a visit to one of the chess makers around!
