My Obsession with Growing Taller
By conArch on Apr 22, 2008 in Society
Most people think that a fixation on height growth is limited to men. However, as a girl that’s under five feet tall, I can tell you that there have been a lot of times that I wished to be taller than I am.
The main reason for this is that I feel like people don’t take me seriously because I’m so small. They think I’m "cute" and they feel this urge to protect me. While there are certain situations in which that’s okay, there are a lot of times that it causes problems for me.
In my romantic relationships, it takes things off of an even playing field and seems to encourage men to deal with me in a condescending manner. In my work life, it tends to get me passed over for promotions because my bosses don’t seem to think that I have what it takes to command the authority required by higher positions.
For a long time, this frustrated me. I looked into all of the different methods out there for growing taller. I asked my doctor what food should I eat to grow taller. I asked my personal trainer for exercises that would help me gain height.
In the end, I did gain a couple of inches. But more importantly, I gained inner strength. I learned that commanding a room is about creating a presence. That’s something that you can do whether you’re 4′11" or 6′2". It just takes a little more work when you’re littler!
