Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea can create major problems in the lives of people who have it.  It’s miserable to feel tired all the time, at work and at home, and to feel like no amount of sleep makes you feel truly rested.

Sleep apnea interrupts normal sleep because the person’s airways close while they’re sleeping, creating short periods of time where the person doesn’t breathe.  This happens many times throughout the night, and prevents the sleeper from getting truly restful sleep.  The best way to reverse the effects is to use a sleep apnea machine.

Do you think you might have sleep apnea?  Here are some of the symptoms that might indicate a problem:

  • Extreme tiredness during the day
  • Falling asleep at odd or inappropriate times
  • Problems performing sexually
  • Problems with cognitive functions — remembering, focusing

CPAP machines are the most common way of treating sleep apnea.  They consist of a mask strapped to the sleeper’s face, connecting with a tube to a little machine.  The sleep apnea mask keeps the person’s airway open by forcing air through them.  For someone with a light case of sleep apnea, it might only be a little air pressure, but someone with a more severe case might need more air forced through in order to keep the airway open.
