Ratatouille!

On Saturday I was in my doctor’s office all day, participating in a study. While they held us hostage they played movies and provided tons of food. Basically they were testing our blood sugars, so there was a period of time where we couldn’t eat, and another where we could eat as much junk food as we wanted.
In the morning, when I was doing my fasting part of the session, they played the movie Ratatouille. First of all let me say how much it sucks to watch a movie about the culinary arts — even a kids’ movie about the culinary arts — when you are really hungry and aren’t allowed to eat.
In any case, though, watching the movie while knowing I would be eating tons of junk food later on made me think about how much our society has cheapened our culinary experiences these days. Junk food prevails, but it makes us forget how wonderful it is to eat something that has been prepared by fine chefs with culinary training from cooking schools such as Culinard.
I remember my husband telling me something he’d read, that Europeans spend a much higher percentage of their income on food than we do — but they tend to eat less and enjoy it more. It appears we have our priorities all crossed, doesn’t it?
