Being a Writer Isn’t All About Writing

If you’re a writer, you may have heard it before: Being a writer isn’t all about writing.  In fact, I think I only spend half my work hours writing.  The other half are spent marketing.

There are several ways for a writer to market themselves.  The most obvious one is to respond to freelance and contract job ads and submit queries to magazines.  Yes, this is part of marketing, and it is important — but it isn’t the only part.

Another part of marketing yourself as a writer is to have a website.  However, just having a website isn’t enough — you have to always strive for a higher search engine ranking.  This means that you want your website to show up high enough in potential clients’ search engine results that they can find you and bring you their business.

There are several ways to do that.  A blog can help, and is in fact often an important part of link building campaigns.  Blogs are great because they increase your visibility in the online writing community, help build your reputation as a writer, and earn you many relevant contextual links pointing back to your site from other writers’ blogs.  However, when every writer and their mother has a blog, you need to do that and something different if you want to make yourself stand out from the crowd.

Enter your friendly search engine marketing company.  These companies are helpful even for writers, who often claim that they don’t need one because they can do all the writing/marketing work themselves.  We know you can — the problem is that it takes away from time you could spend on paying projects.  The more paying work you take on, the faster you will build your reputation and your career, so it makes sense to hire an Internet marketing service to do the grunt work for you.
